Children's Books: February First Half

Hard to believe but we are halfway through February already! I am unfortunately behind in my children's books reading goal for the year, but I do have a few more selections to share with you.

Scuba Bunnies by Christine Loomis was actually a January read that I missed in my previous wrap-up...This adorable book followed several bunnies as they traveled from bath time into the ocean waters, all in engaging yet simple poetry. It would be fun to discuss their different animal encounters and find out what animal your child would most like to meet (I just hope they won't be disappointed that there aren't any sea creatures in their bathtub!)

Bats at the Ballgame by Brian Lies is a beautiful addition to this series. With well-done drawings and an engaging rhyme pattern, I definitely recommend reading this one out loud together. Plus, there are a lot of cute parallels between the bats' baseball game and human ones.

The storyline of Where to, Little Wombat by Charles Fuge offers several options to engage the child. First, the setting introduces a little bit of Australia to the young learner. Second, as little Wombat tries to find a new home, you can practice prediction skills on how the potential dwellings will work out.

What to Do if an Elephant Stands on Your Foot? by Michelle Robinson was a fun book. The storyline follows a young adventurer who just can't stop falling into trouble with a variety of jungle animals. For an extension activity, older readers could write their own versions of the book using other groups of animals such as farm or forest animals.

Tippy, Tippy, Tippy, Splash! by Candance Fleming was not one of my top reads this month. I found the rhyme scheme confusing. However, younger readers will probably enjoy the sounds and seeing the rabbits get the better of the man. Pirates on the Farm by Denette Fretz was also not a favorite. It does have a good message overall and has some religious reflection at the back as well.
